PREGNANCY WEEK BY WEEK

24 weeks pregnant

About the size of a corn cob

30cm and about 600 g

This week

Learning to breathe before there is air.

  • Lungs getting ready
The lungs begin producing surfactant, the substance that will let them open with the first breath.
  • Responding to sound
Loud sounds and music can now get a response: a kick, a startle, a wriggle.
  • Nostrils open
The nostrils, sealed until now, open up and the baby starts practise-breathing amniotic fluid.

Written against the NHS week-by-week guide. A picture, not a measurement: every baby grows at their own pace.

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION, FOR THE TWO OF YOU

“Name one thing you are grateful for this week, however small.”

Every Sunday, Syncry asks you both one question like this. You each answer in your own words, and the answers become your book.
